The form of a prayer known as a novena )Latin for "nine") has always enjoyed the favor of the church. The first novena was held in the Upper Room, where the apostles and the Blessed Virgin prayed fervently during the nine days between Christ's ascension into heaven and the coming of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost.
